Vehicle inspections in British Columbia serve a clear purpose: ensuring every vehicle on our roads meets minimum safety standards. Depending on your situation, you might need one of several different inspection types — each with its own requirements and scope.
At Tire Point Automotive, we are a designated inspection facility that handles all inspection types. Here is a breakdown of what each one involves.
Out of Province Inspection
If you are moving to BC from another province or country and bringing a vehicle with you, an out-of-province inspection is required before you can register the vehicle. This is one of the most thorough inspection types.
The inspection covers:
- Braking system — pads, rotors, drums, brake lines, parking brake
- Steering and suspension — tie rods, ball joints, control arms, shocks, struts
- Tires and wheels — tread depth, condition, proper size, lug nut torque
- Lighting — headlights, taillights, brake lights, signals, dash indicators
- Exhaust system — leaks, emissions compliance, catalytic converter
- Glass and mirrors — windshield condition, mirror integrity
- Frame and body — structural rust, damage, undercarriage condition
- Engine and transmission — fluid levels, leaks, operation
If the vehicle passes, you receive a signed inspection report that ICBC requires for registration. If it fails, we provide a detailed list of what needs repair. Once repairs are completed and verified, the inspection can be re-signed.
Uber and Rideshare Inspections
Planning to drive for Uber, Lyft, or another rideshare service in BC? You need a specific vehicle inspection that meets the Passenger Transportation Board requirements. This inspection must be renewed annually.
The rideshare inspection covers the same safety items as a standard inspection but with particular attention to passenger safety features. The vehicle must also meet age and mileage requirements set by the rideshare platform.
Commercial Vehicle Inspections
Commercial vehicles — vans, trucks, and vehicles used for business purposes — require regular inspections to maintain compliance with BC transportation regulations. The frequency depends on the vehicle type and its commercial use.
These inspections are more rigorous than personal vehicle inspections and include load-bearing component checks relevant to the vehicle's commercial application.
JDM and Imported Vehicle Inspections
Japanese Domestic Market vehicles are popular in BC, but they require specialized inspection knowledge. These right-hand-drive vehicles must meet Canadian safety standards, which sometimes requires modifications to lighting, speedometer calibration, and other systems.
Our technicians are experienced with JDM vehicles and understand the specific requirements for bringing these cars into compliance with BC regulations.
How to Prepare for Your Inspection
While you cannot predict every outcome, you can improve your chances of passing on the first visit:
- Make sure all lights work — check headlights, taillights, signals, and brake lights
- Check your tire tread depth and condition
- Ensure your windshield wipers are functional
- Top up all fluids
- Address any known issues beforehand — a check engine light is typically an automatic fail
- Bring your vehicle registration and any previous inspection records
