How to Choose the Right Tires for Your Car, SUV, or Truck

Tires

Walking into a tire shop can feel like walking into a restaurant with a 50-page menu. Hundreds of options, unfamiliar terminology, and a wide range of prices — it is enough to make anyone's eyes glaze over.

But choosing the right tires does not have to be complicated. Here is a straightforward guide to help you make a smart decision.

Understanding Tire Size

Every tire has a size code printed on its sidewall, something like 225/65R17. Here is what those numbers mean:

  • 225 — the width of the tire in millimetres
  • 65 — the aspect ratio (sidewall height as a percentage of width)
  • R — radial construction (virtually all modern tires)
  • 17 — the wheel diameter in inches

Your vehicle's correct tire size is printed on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb and in your owner's manual. Always match this size unless you are intentionally changing to a different wheel setup.

Types of Tires

All-season tires are designed for year-round use in mild conditions. They offer a balance of dry grip, wet traction, and comfort. They are the most common type of tire sold in the Lower Mainland.

All-weather tires are a step up from all-seasons for winter capability. They carry the mountain snowflake symbol, meaning they meet winter tire standards while being suitable for year-round use.

Winter tires offer the best cold-weather performance. The softer rubber compound and aggressive tread pattern provide superior grip on snow and ice. Essential for drivers who travel mountain highways.

Performance tires prioritize grip and handling over comfort and longevity. They are designed for sportier vehicles and drivers who enjoy spirited driving.

What Matters Most in a Tire

When comparing tires, focus on these factors in order of importance:

Safety ratings: Check independent testing from organizations like Consumer Reports or the Tire Rack. Look at wet braking distance, snow traction, and hydroplaning resistance.

Tread life warranty: This gives you a rough idea of how long the tires should last. A tire with an 80,000 km warranty will generally outlast one with a 50,000 km warranty, though driving habits affect actual lifespan.

Noise and comfort: Some tires are significantly quieter than others. If you spend a lot of time on the highway, noise rating matters more than you might think.

Price: The cheapest tire is rarely the best value. A mid-range tire that lasts 80,000 km costs less per kilometre than a budget tire that wears out at 40,000 km. Factor in total cost of ownership, not just purchase price.

Should You Buy Four Matching Tires?

Yes, whenever possible. Mismatched tires — different brands, sizes, or tread depths on the same vehicle — can compromise handling, braking, and all-wheel-drive system function. If you can only replace two, put the new tires on the rear axle regardless of whether your vehicle is front or rear-wheel drive.
